DiCE Project

LCA of a smart Pillbox

As part of my master's thesis in Industrial Ecology, I focused on the sustainability of digital health devices, specifically a smart pillbox, to support the DICE Project. This project, led by Janssen Pharmaceutica NV and funded by the EU, aims to reduce the environmental impact of digital health devices.

The objective of my research was to evaluate the environmental sustainability of the smart pillbox at both the product and functional levels. I analysed the product using LCA and proposed sustainable redesign recommendations. Additionally, I compared the health benefits and impact to understand the overall effect of the smart pillbox on human health. This approach represents a new way of assessing the impact of a product, providing a broader perspective on its overall impact and a basis for comparing its environmental impact and benefits. Rather than only focusing on the environmental impact, this approach considers the benefits of the product as well.
