Gerrard street

Sustainable design strategies

The client for this assignment is Gerrard Street (rebranded to ‘Repeat’) which is a company that provides subscription-based earphones with a unique offer of free repairs for life. In a group of six people we analysed Gerrard Street's latest earbud design using three different sustainable design strategies: ecodesign, cradle to cradle, and biomimicry. We proposed multiple redesign concepts based on these strategies to enhance the sustainability of Gerrard Street's earbuds.

To apply the ecodesign strategy, we used a strategy wheel and a simplified life cycle assessment to identify areas for improvement. In the case of cradle to cradle, we generated ideas for positive impacts through material return and kinetic energy generation, such as charging earbuds while people move of dance. Finally, we proposed an idea based on the cat righting reflex, inspired by biomimicry, to prevent damage to the earbuds when dropped.
